"I’ve been training teachers for the Cambridge CELTA and Delta for many years and in many different countries. Over time I recognised that some trainees who were unfamiliar with certain teaching approaches would benefit from a short introduction to teaching ideas and concepts before they started a rigorous and intensive teacher training course like the Cambridge CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL. More about the principles underlying the design of the course…"

"Through our contact in the English teacher training sector, we also saw this need for a course that helped prepare candidates for their training courses. This isn’t a course to train people to teach. It’s an orientation course to better prepare them for their English teacher training, which can be very intensive and stressful when you have no idea at all about teaching or education ideas today. We want to thank everyone who has contributed and especially the teachers of and Giralda Centre, Seville, Spain for letting me into their classrooms. More about Emma."

I really didn’t know what teaching was all about before I started this course, but now, thanks to the videos and the introduction to the basics, I feel a lot better about starting my teacher training. I hear it’s pretty intense, but I feel a lot better prepared for it now. Also appreciated Emma, the tutor touching base with me from time to time – it’s hard to stay motivated for online courses sometimes.

“The ELT Campus TEFL Preparation Course is definitely worth its modest price and the time one needs to invest in completing the course. Anyone planning to do a CELTA will greatly benefit from the basic orientation and understanding that the TEFL Prep Course provides. The videos offer a glimpse into what a ‘real’ ELT classroom is like, invaluable for those with no experience in particular.”

I enjoyed the appetizer course! It was a very well planned out course for newbies, as myself. Easy to follow, some tasks were more difficult and the ability to retake the quiz to pass was a great idea. I loved the videos, it gave me a real life like idea of what I am getting myself into. Looking forward to the CELTA Course in Frankfurt.

I think the good thing about the precourse was to get a glimpse into everything, to get yourself tuned to the classroom situation. some of the routine was not new anymore. The hardest parts for me (in the CELTA course) were ICQ and CCQ – so maybe it would help to include some practice and tips for it into the course? and monitoring.

How the course may have helped you feel orientated and “in tune” with becoming an English teacher. Has it changed your ideas at all about what you thought teaching was about?

I have always been on the other side of the story. I’ve been learning English since I was about 5 or 6. I am used to a classroom routine, where you have different stages etc. I just never quite realized that this is what was happening.
It was natural for me and my colleagues to, for example, be introduced to the topic first, then get to the material and do a little post exercise of some kind after. I have just come to the realisation that there is a procedure to follow and it all makes sense now! I can now understand all the techniques my English teachers were using and it is so interesting.

Overall, The TEFL Preparation Course has helped me come to an understanding of how a class can or should be managed. Some things might have been common sense, but I hadn’t noticed them till I started the course. For example, something so simple as: not repeating yourself much with words like “okay?”, “yeah?” or treating the students as children. This is a very typical mistake and I have been on the other side of too. I didn’t used to like it whenever they would talk to me in that way and I would think to myself “I’m not a child, it’s just not my first language”!

I feel more confident about doing the CELTA after this course. I was always a bit nervous of the fact that I am not a native speaker. I have noticed throughout the course, that it is not about being native, but being able to teach and handle situations quick and smoothly.
Even though I haven’t started my CELTA yet, I feel that I am in a better place to do so. I feel much more confident having learnt new concepts, techniques and having observed many lessons that have given me new ideas.

Overall, I would highly recommend the course as a pre CELTA experience.

    The TEFL Preparatory Course

It prepared me for what to expect during the CELTA course, and taught me basic (yet essential) terminology, methodology. The prep course also showed me by examples how it works in practice, and when I came to learn about it during CELTA I didn’t have to fight it, everything just made sense.

To put it in a simple way, the prep course just roughed me up to what is to come. I could even play with it through the many scenarios each module concluded with.

Very concise, thought through from beginning to end.

This course is really helpful to know what to expect from a language teaching job. It provides you the tools to be ready to prepare your future lessons, how to manage a classroom, how to diversify your lessons, how to get your students to achieve the aims, … It’s really interesting and it will be useful to all the people who want to become a teacher and don’t know what to expect from the job.

I can’t wait to do the CELTA course, I feel more confident to do it after this preparation course.

I found the course extremely useful, and I feel more confident about completing the CELTA certification. I have been doing some preparation for understanding English grammar on my own, so completing this pre-CELTA course that helped me focus on teaching, and the mindset I need to have towards teaching, really helped me.

I really enjoyed the various ways the information was presented to me–visually, written, interactive, and through hearing and seeing a classroom. I found being able to see a classroom and what it would be like very useful, and I found the quiz to determine primarily what kind of learner I am very interesting! I think it’s important for me to think about the way I learn and my past learning experiences to work towards understanding how to teach better.

I also found the pictures during the course really fun especially the little sound effects and the cheering by the little drawn people! Providing a certificate of completion was a good idea because I feel a little more accomplished, and ready to tackle the next challenge that is CELTA.

I had been thinking about doing a teaching English course ever since I got back from travelling around Costa Rica. I didn’t really understand how you could suddenly be a teacher even of your Mother tongue language by doing a two day online course with no contact with actual students so I looked into Celta. It seemed like a very tough course but precisely because of that, once certified, employers really respect the qualification.

As the main course is so intense and you really need to put 100% into it, I thought that doing the online prep course was a great idea. It’s very thorough and very comprehensive and really helped getting me up to date with all the new terminology before I started the intensive four week course in Seville. It is scary having a complete career change and studying again after a long time out of full time education, but it is so worth it. I learned so much and my colleagues and tutors were absolutely amazing and so supportive.

I’d really recommend doing the prep course even if you are undecided about doing the actual CELTA qualification as it’s a great introduction to CELTA methods and understanding the world of teaching English.

I highly recommend this course as I now feel totally prepared and more confident before starting the CELTA course.
This course is highly informative and teaches in fun memorable and useful ways.

The TEFL Preparation Course has given me an insight of what teaching adults really is.
I have no teaching experience and this preparation helped me realize that it is not just a matter of being able to speak English. There is much more to it: there are techniques to be aware of, methodology, terminology, and no room left for improvisation. With concrete examples through the modules, I now roughly know what to expect during the CELTA course in July and find it reassuring.
I certainly would recommend the TEFL Preparation Course to all those, like me, who have never taught. Our working experience can help in front of a class composed of workers as we were in a recent past.

I’m very happy about having taken up the course because now I’m aware of what to expect from my CELTA. I enjoyed every minute of learning here and it made me feel I was a student again. And actually I really was! So now I feel more confident about my future studies and I am sure it will not be such a scary thing for me as it could be without TEFL Preparation Course! I’d like to thank all teachers who participated in creation of it and of course to Emma Pratt. And I highly recommend the course for all the people who really to make teaching English their profession.

    • Emma

      Thanks Anastasiya, you’re most welcome!

    Simbiso Bikwa

I signed up to the TEFL Preparation course before I had secured a place to my prospective institution to study the CELTA course. I had only gone through maybe to about halfway when I got through to the interview stage for my intensive and I have to say what I covered really gave me the confidence in my interview to stand out with those who had previous experience. I then completed the rest of course before I started the intensive.

The preparation course is so concise where it needs to be and it literally covers everything you will learn on the CELTA course (how to prepare your future lessons, how to get your students to achieve the aims, how to diversify your lessons and classroom management to mention a few). The course is also delivered in a high quality manner where you have interactive exercises, quizzes and videos. It’s so well thought through.

I highly recommend it to anyone who desires to teach but has no teaching experience because it puts things into perspective and potentially paves the way to achieve well on your selected TEFL course.

    • Emma

You’re welcome Simbiso. I’m glad it set you up well for your CELTA! Go well.
